Storage Tank Management
Active provides a wide range of storage tank management services. From locating potential underground storage tanks (USTs) to removal and installation of new tanks, Active can fill your needs. We are a preferred environmental consultant and contractor for numerous insurance carriers. And, of course, we are an NJDEP-certified tank removal contractor.
Tank Location Services
Whether you are selling your home, or looking to purchase a home, it is important for you to know if there are any USTs located on the property. Active uses a specialized tool called a magnetometer to aid in the location of USTs, which may delay or even prevent the transaction. Using the magnetometer, Active will “sweep” the property to determine whether any anomalies indicative of a UST exist. Suspect locations are further investigated by inserting a tile probe into the ground in an attempt to determine if the anomaly is indeed a tank, and to establish the dimensions of the UST.
In addition to the magnetometer survey, Active will visually inspect the site for other indicators of USTs:
• Depressed, or “low spots,” in the ground that may
indicate where a UST may have once been located;
•The locations of any former or previously
unidentified fill or vent lines that penetrate the foundation or exterior walls of the home.

Tank Investigations
There are a variety of reasons you may need a tank investigation. Among the most common are:
• Conversion from a UST heating system to an Aboveground Storage Tank (AST) heating system
• Applying for a tank protection plan
• Changing homeowner’s insurance carriers
• Re-financing a mortgage
• Buying or selling a home
• A sudden increase in fuel oil consumption
Active’s preferred method of tank investigation is soil sampling. Soil borings are installed along all four (4) sides of the tank and the soils are examined for any evidence of heating oil. Samples are collected from each of the borings and are analyzed by a NJDEP-certified laboratory for Diesel Range Organics (DRO), as prescribed in the NJDEP Technical Requirements for Site Remediation, or “Tech Regs.”

Tank Removal Services
For nearly 20 years, Active has been a leader in residential tank removal. Our team works with you, and for you, to assure you that the process goes as smoothly and quickly as possible. Whether you are selling your home, purchasing a new home, converting to an Aboveground Storage Tank (AST), or simply removing an old tank no longer in use, Active is here for you.
How We Do It:
Prior to any work being done, Active will visit your property, at no cost to you, to complete a site inspection. During this inspection, we will determine the tank’s location, orientation, size, and the amount of fuel remaining in the tank, if any. We will also note any site-specific conditions which may affect the tank removal activities. Active will use this information to prepare a proposal for the tank removal. Upon your approval of the proposal, we will obtain the proper local permits. When the permits are issued, we will schedule a date for the tank removal, and submit for a utility markout, as required by law.
On the day of the tank removal, Active will arrive on site at the arranged time with all the necessary equipment to perform the job as proposed. Significant effort will be made to minimize the impact to your property from the tank removal activities. Overlying soils will be excavated, exposing the top of the tank. The tank will then be cut open, entered by an OSHA-certified technician, and cleaned in accordance with the guidelines set forth by the American Petroleum Institute. After the tank has been cleaned, it will be removed from the ground and placed on 6mm poly sheeting, where it will be inspected for holes by Active and the municipal inspector. The tank excavation will be observed for evidence of petroleum contamination. Once the tank has been cleared for recycling, the excavation will be backfilled with clean fill material and the previously excavated overburden soils to grade level.
In some instances, there will be evidence of a release into the soils. The following lists the steps you need to take if your tank has been determined to be leaking:
• Contact the NJDEP. The regulations require that the NJDEP be notified of any releases into the
soils or ground water of the State. We can handle this step for you.
• Notify your homeowner’s insurance company immediately. Most homeowner’s insurance
policies provide coverage for a third party liability claim under these circumstances. We can
make this call with you.
•
Be patient. Once you have notified your insurance carrier, they will generally commission a
Third Party Coverage Investigation at your property. The carrier’s consultant will contact you
by phone and ask for some background information from you. A date will be scheduled for the
investigation. After the investigation is completed, it may take up to three (3) weeks for your
carrier to make a coverage determination. Be sure to request a copy of the report of findings
from their consultant.
Active will be more than happy to help you through this process. Remember, we are a full service contractor/consultant and can perform any necessary soil and ground water remediation at your property.
